WALCZYK (Folk waltz)

It is danced in any number of couples in a triple meter (3/4 or 3/8). The couples move around the circle at a moderate tempo with small steps. The change of the direction of rotation is usually signalled by the so-called: stamps. Walczyk (Folk dance) is one of the most popular dances in Poland and has its local variant in all parts of the country. In the Lubuskie region, it is called walcerek, in the Kurpie region, it is called okrąglock, while in the Silesian region, it is called waloszek. Its popularity stems from the great freedom that folk waltz provides in terms of creating new dance figures and lyrics. Sometimes, the name of a particular variant of the dance is derived from the first words of a song, for example: “Zielona rutka” (The Green Rue). The most famous Polish folk waltz song is “Szła dzieweczka do laseczka, do zielonego”.
